Michelle Thompson on… Photography as Art

When you take a photograph you create an image using light. Light is everywhere, appearing in many different ways, intensities & colours. A camera allows light to pass through the lens and records each image on a digital sensor or film.

The first camera obscura (meaning “dark chamber”) were used by artists. Light rays pass through a pin hole into a darkened room, forming the exact image (from outside) onto a wall. The chosen image, although not very clear could be traced or painted. With the use of a lens the images became sharper. The camera obscura, when reproduced much smaller evolved as the modern camera. This wonderful invention enabled artist to become photographer using the camera as the medium to capture real, faithful art.

The successful photographer must have a technical and artistic back ground combined with passion for the medium, as well as people & the world in which we live & explore. From its earliest beginning’s, people used photography for travel, documentary, the recording of social change, war, art, nature and portraits of loved ones.
